How Visir helped Axos Systems modernise and shift its AWS environment.

Strengthening data sovereignty while improving performance by up to 93%. Axos wanted to ensure its technology environment was reliable, maintainable, performed, and aligned with customer expectations.

Overview

Axos Systems wanted to ensure its technology environment was reliable, maintainable, performed, and aligned with customer expectations.

The Challenge

Axos moved from an on-premises environment to AWS, but the migration left areas of technical debt.

Reduce Billing Run

One key business requirement was to reduce a billing run that could take up to 14 hours to complete, with the target of bringing it under two hours.

Address Technical Debt

The team were focused on addressing business requirements and reducing operational risk while being forward focused on implementing best practise solutions.

Resourcing Challenge

Axos wanted a partner who could become a point of dependency that could provide deep cloud expertise, practical implementation support, and knowledge transfer.

The Solution

Visir worked closely with Axos to support both immediate operational needs and longer-term architecture improvements. The engagement provided access to experienced Visir specialists who could help assess the environment, assist with solutions and support infrastructure modernisation while working closely alongside the Axos team.
The partnership gave Axos flexibility. Visir was able to provide hands-on delivery for priority projects, such as performance improvements, while also educating and upskilling Axos engineers. This helped Axos progress required work without Axos losing momentum and enabled the Axos team to make decisions with increased confidence.

Migrating to AWS in New Zealand

Customer preference for data sovereignty became a major driver for change. Axos customers voiced their preference of the data to reside locally. When the AWS New Zealand region became available, Axos saw an opportunity to combine its infrastructure upgrade programme with a move from Australia as their primary environment over to New Zealand.
The move enabled Axos to meet a key customer expectation with data sovereignty while simplifying its disaster recovery model. With primary data hosted in New Zealand, Axos could better align its environment with customer and compliance expectations.

Key Successes

Billing Performance

A process that previously took up to 14 hours was reduced to ~1 hour, exceeding the original business requirement target of under 2 hours.

Data Sovereignty

Hosting of primary data in New Zealand helped Axos successfully respond to customer preferences around data sovereignty.

Disaster Recovery

The new model with New Zealand as primary and Sydney as the recovery location reduced complexity and legal uncertainty.

Internal Capability

Through close collaboration, communication, and education with the Visir team, the knowledge & skills transfer with the Axos team has been a success.

Partnership Impact

Axos sees the relationship with Visir as a close partnership, more like working with trusted colleagues than engaging a traditional supplier. The ability to make decisions quickly, avoid unnecessary overhead, to focus on practical delivery helped keep work moving. Visir provided the expertise Axos needed while remaining collaborative, responsive, and easy to work with.
"It's been the right decision to engage with Visir. It feels like I have additional colleagues I get to work with. We can hand work out to Visir with full trust that they're going to deliver it. That's no problem at all."
